Konza Prairie Biological Station is a nature preserve situated in Manhattan, Kansas. It is a first-class example of long-term research and conservation while also being a great place for visitors to hike and enjoy the serene environment. The trail is described as a conversation hike, not too difficult, and the people on the trail are known to be friendly, reflecting the Kansas spirit. The views along the trail are breathtaking and worth the drive down the McDowell Creek road. Visitors are reminded not to bring their dogs along, as it is prohibited, to preserve the research, and maintain the area's cleanliness. There is a suggested two-dollar donation for maintenance that is worth contributing to maintain the cleanliness and avoid littering. The preserve operates seven days a week, with flexible opening hours to accommodate visitors. The Konza Prairie Biological Station is an ideal destination for those looking to relax, take a hike, and enjoy the gift of nature.

Not only a first-class example of long-term research and conservation, but also a great place for a hike! But do NOT bring your dog, please! If people keep ignoring the rules and bringing dogs they will have to close access to preserve the research and we’ll all lose out. If you come, make sure you hike to the lookout spot, it’s an amazing view of tallgrass and gallery forests. Worth the trip down McDowell Creek road, for sure.
This is one of my favorite hikes. there are no dogs aloud which may be inconvenient but at least you don't have to worry about stepping in dog droppings. There is also a suggested two dollar donation, for maintenance. Never seen any trash so I believe it's worth it also many butterflies and animals
This preserve is wonderful and gorgeous. It's an easy walk and the trail is well-maintained. At first the trail seems like nothing special, but give it a bit and then BAM you're surrounded by beautiful scenery all around. I took the counterclockwise route, which I think had the most climactic scenery development.
Another big plus is the lack of dogs (and dog poo, and self-centered dog owners). I know most dog owners are considerate people, but the bad ones are so tedious (like bad parents)...always making their dog the star of the show. Imagine going to a nice Italian restaurant and instead getting a Chuck-E-Cheese experience. Sounds crazy, but people do it all the time with their dogs. Kudos to Konza for not allowing that. The result is a trail where nature is the true star of the show. Highly recommended!
I was not all that fond of Kansas until I found Konza Prairie. It's gorgeous out there. It is mainly a Research Station and I am a Docent there. They do a lot to educate students on the Tall-grass Prairie. They do have public trails. Please respect them and stay on the trails and don't bring dogs. There is research going on even near the public trails which is why dogs are not permitted.
Worked here for one summer for a grad student doing research. Now I live halfway across the country but I go out of my way to stop here when I do travel in the vicinity. This place is truly something special and beautiful any time of year. The native prairie plant community is amazing. No other place like it. The wildflowers put on a show throughout the growing season. There's always something different blooming. Birding here is also a great experience. Everything from dickcissels, nighthawks, and meadowlarks on the prairie to bluebirds, orioles, flycatchers, tanagers, and red-headed woodpeckers in the woods. Too many to list. On my last visit in Sept I saw big flocks of warblers and eastern kingbirds moving through. If you plan a visit remember that no pets are allowed and to bring your own water.
Beautiful views and nicely marked trails. This is a hiking only trail so no bikes or pets allowed because it is a biological station. This also means you need to remain on the trails as the land surrounding it is protected. I would highly recommend going early when it opens at 6 am if you want to beat the family groups.
We had a great time. The views were amazing and the trail was well kept. We got there just as some soldiers were finishing PT and the trail was pretty clear of other hikers. We took the shorter trail due to have three children with us, and it was a great choice.
Meditative, pure, serene. And the hike is what I describe as conversation hike. It's not difficult and you can chat with your friends. And not a surprise, but people on the trail are all very friendly, Kansas friendly.
